Ii have the LG ultrafine, one cable for power, monitor and 1 TB and 3 USB C ports, (eGPUs might, but reportedly don't work on M1-based Macs yet.) For TB3-equipped Airs, the limits have been "two external 4K displays or one 5K display" (Intel models) or "one external display" (M1 models). I guess you can run up to 6 external screens through a hubĪ Thunderbolt chain can have up to six devices, but that by itself does not get you extra displays. Thanks for the tip on Affinity Photo and DXO. Something like Photoshop would be the most intensive thing I would run, besides some lightweight programming via IDLE's like P圜harm (for Python). From what I am hearing the M1 MB Air is pretty solid on its own. Usually I would agree with you on the MBP but in this case, and for my usage I am not sure it's worth the extra cost. Apparently Affinity is native now (according to other reply) so I can check that out as well. I could always get adaptors if needed to add more functionality.Īs far as native photo applications I have no idea. That goes hand in hand with one single external monitor is plenty for me, if I even use it at all.Ģ ports is fine.
I could always hook up the MBA to my external monitor I use for work, via HDMI (with an adaptor) so that is fine. I have been editing photos on a 13" screen for years now, and it has been fine for me. I've read DXO, even though it's Intel at the moment, is a lot faster on the M1 Macs. The M1 Macs will good for 4K video as well.įor photo editing software, I use Affinity Photo and DXO PL4. Both of which are significantly slower than the new M1 Macs. I now have a 2017 MacBookPro with 8GB RAM for travelling and a 2017 iMac 27" 24GB RAM. If the machine had more RAM then I would still be using it. I have edited Sony A7 24MP Raw files on a 2011 MacBookAir 11" with 4GB RAM. Sorry.Īny machine that is up to 5 years old (or anything that is supported by Big Sur) would be fine.

My sarcastic remark would be to wait for next get Apple Silicone Macs, or get a Mac Pro.

The main question I have is will a 16GB MB Air M1 be sufficient? Or do I need to upgrade to MBP? All still photography, raw CR2 files, no videos. I plan on getting new photo editing software, either subscription based Adobe or trying something totally different. I am going to ditch that as well (don't have the licensing info anymore anyway). It has a very old standalone version of PS6 installed on it.
I am planning on replacing my 2011 MBP with 8gb Ram. Are you currently using any applications that are 32-bit and that do not have updated 64-bit versions? If so, can you afford to lose them?

Can you find native photo application software so that you can get the full speed of the machine from Day 1? Alternately, are you willing to run Intel-only software under translation (taking a bit of a speed hint), so that when native versions come out, you'll realize a speed jump on the same hardware? Can you live with a single external monitor? So I'd think that the decision would boil down to Some extreme photo editing tasks might require more than 16 GB of RAM, but most are not that demanding. The iGPU is probably not quite as fast as some of the discrete GPUs available for the 16" MacBook Pro, but it should be a big improvement on the iGPUs in Intel-based 13" models. On Geekbench 5 charts, both have single-core scores well above Intel-based laptops, and their multi-core cores are slightly higher than that of an 16" MBP with a 8-core Core i9. Both have limits of 16 GB of RAM, 2 TB of internal SSD space, two USB4( TB3 ) ports, and one external monitor. The difference between the 13" M1-based MacBook Airs and the 13" entry-level M1-based MacBook Pros is six of one, half-a-dozen of the other.
